Protect the Goodies

When I first began running, I was never truly taught the importance of having a great sports bra while running. I thought just buying any type of sports bra would be good until I truly began running long distances. As I started marathon training, I realized having a good support bra is crucial. It took marathon training for my eyes to be opened to how important protecting your goodies can truly be.

Why is having a good sports bra so important?

When you engage in any form of physical activity it causes the breast to bounce up and down and sometimes can do a figure eight type movement. If the breast is not properly supported this can cause the ligaments and tissues in the breast to stretch out (aka sagging). Once the ligaments are stretched out the breast does not bounce back to its original shape.

In addition, without the proper sports bra excessive movement can cause pain in the upper and lower back.  So, in investing in a good sports bra is not all about caring for the breast but also helps in preventing upper and lower back injury.

Some may be thinking, “Oh well my breast is not that big so I will be fine with grabbing any type of sports bra”. The answer to that is, “It doesn’t matter how small or big your breast is you will still have movement when running or engaging in some form of exercise.  Therefore, having a good sports bra is not just for women who have larger breast but for all sizes.

How do you find the best sports bra for you?

It’s very important to find a running store near you that specializes in helping you get fitted properly for a sports bra that is best suited for your body. It’s important that the bra fits snug (not too tight to where you are unable to breathe). Your sports bra should be tighter than your regular bra. The band of the sports bra should not have a lot of movement and your breast should not be bulging out. Another key factor is making sure that there is no movement around the shoulders or band that may cause chafing.

As you venture out to training this fall and winter make sure you protect your goodies. Remember having a good sports bra not only protects your goodies but is vital in preventing unnecessary injuries. Take time out to do your research and check out some great running stores to get fitted properly for a sports bra. Your breast will thank you later. Remember, “Protect the goodies.”

Happy Running!!!
