Is Your Skincare Sabotaging Your Fitness Success?
Hey there my melanin beauties. Your introverted beauty is back. Over the past few weeks I’ve been following your runs on social media and I’m really inspired. I was having my cup of Jo one morning and you had me wondering, with all the time and effort you devote to exercise and likely eating right, have you considered what’s in your skincare?
You might already know but our skin is the largest organ of the body and what we apply to it is absorbed quickly. Basically, what you put on your skin is just as important as what you put in your body. Unfortunately, there are some ingredients used in skincare that are known toxins and for now it’s up to you and me to watch out for them to ensure we’re safe.
Don’t worry you don’t have to be a chemist. If you’re reading nutrition labels as you shop for your meals, you’ve already got the skills down. Just do the same for your bath and body care products. Flip those suckers over and check out what’s in them.
First, things first, don’t believe the myth that if you can’t pronounce it or eat it, it shouldn’t go on your skin. That’s just not true. Without boring you to death, just know that there are naming guidelines that are used in labeling that use the scientific terms versus layman’s terms. I have difficulty pronouncing some of the ingredients I use but ALL of them are non-toxic.
I’m going to share one of the tools I use when formulating that can help you when shopping for your body care products. Remember I said you don’t have to be a chemist right? Well if you’ve got a cell phone, you can download the EWG app HERE and if you’re unsure about an ingredient, simply flip the bottle over and with a quick scan, you’ll get the rating of the ingredients that are in the product.
I love this app because it empowers my beauties by giving them information so they can make educated decisions on what they use on their skin or on their family’s skin for that matter.
That’s why I put together a Detox Diva Guide to help you start to recognize some of the most common harmful ingredients used right now. You can download it HERE. You’ll notice just how commonly used these ingredients are in your everyday skincare.
Don’t worry about getting it all in one fell swoop. Just like fitness, it takes a little time but with a little effort and consistency (sound familiar?), you’ll transition your products in no time.
Start with those products you use the absolute most like, deodorant, body wash and shampoo. You’ll be surprised at how quickly you begin to recognize the most common toxic ingredients. Before you know it, you’ll pick up a bottle, flip it over and with a quick glance you’ll know whether to pop it in the cart or put it back on the shelf.
Well, that’s all for now. Be sure to come back and let me know how it’s going. And, don’t hesitate to shoot me an email if you have questions. I’m here to help.
Until next time Sugahs…
XOXO
