Girls on the Run and BGR! Relaunch National Alliance

Black Girls RUN! is excited to announce the relaunch of our national alliance with Girls on the Run International. Partners since 2014 ,members of BGR! serve as Girls on the Run coaches, running buddies, and 5K volunteers with local Girls on the Run councils throughout the U.S. BGR! and Girls on the Run will be working together to serve more girls in the African American community while further engaging members as volunteer coaches.

“The partnership with Girls on the Run is just a natural fit,” says Jay Ell Alexander, CEO and Owner of Black Girls RUN!. “Introducing these young girls to running and physical activity through an intentional curriculum designed to enhance girls’ social and emotional skills is crucial to the healthy growth of our community and Black Girls RUN!’s mission supports that.”

Black Girls RUN! will support the organization with volunteers recruitment and promotion of its local events while collaborating on issues impacting our community.

“Girls on the Run is thrilled to join forces with Black Girls RUN! to inspire more girls to be joyful, healthy and confident,” says Heather Pressley, SVP of Mission Advancement for Girls on the Run International. “We are excited about this renewed partnership and look forward to working together to engage more girls and women of color in our life-changing programs.”

Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based positive youth development (PYD) program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to successfully navigate life experiences. With more than 200 local councils in all 50 states, Girls on the Run serves over 200,000 girls annually. Over the course of the ten-week program, girls in 3rd-8th grade develop essential skills to help them navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness. The program culminates with girls positively impacting their communities through a service project and being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K event.  With the largest 5K series by number of events in the world, Girls on the Run hosts more than 330 5Ks per year.
